Sworn Translation

Unlike standard translation, sworn translation (also known as certified translation) can only be performed by a translator who has taken an oath before a court. In Belgium, a translator must be registered with the Belgian Register of Sworn Translators and Interpreters in order to practice as such. The list is available on the FPS Justice website.

In what Context?

A sworn translation is required in official administrative and legal contexts, such as:

  • Application for Belgian nationality or family reunification

  • Recognition of a foreign diploma

  • Court proceedings

  • Immigration procedures

  • International inheritance

  • Marriage to a foreign national

What Type of Documents?

As an experienced sworn translator, I translate in particular:

  • Birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce certificate, certificate of celibacy

  • Criminal record extract

  • Power of attorney, will, deed of succession

  • Visa, passport, residence permit

  • Diploma, transcript, equivalence certificate

  • Judgment, ruling, order

  • Articles of association, annual report, balance sheet

  • Contract, agreement

  • Medical file

  • Hospitalisation report

  • Certificate of incapacity

  • Academic study and publication
